A new UK partnership between GoodSAM, National Farmers Union - helping coordinate farmers who have the right equipment to create firebreaks rapidly in the event of wildfires, protecting land, livestock and communities.
Wildfires in rural areas spread fastest across open land. Early intervention with firebreaks - cleared strips that stop fire advancing - is one of the most effective containment tools available, but requires specialised agricultural equipment that fire services don't always have immediately to hand.
Farmers with tractors, ploughs, cultivators and other suitable equipment can be pre-registered on GoodSAM. When a wildfire is reported, the Fire and Rescue Service can rapidly identify and coordinate the nearest registered farmer to assist with firebreak creation under the direction of the incident commander.
GoodSAM's geolocation platform identifies the closest registered farmers to an active incident in real time. Alerts can be sent directly to the farmer's device with location, instructions and fire service contact details - getting the right equipment to the right place, fast.
Registered farmers always operate under the direct command of the Fire & Rescue Service incident commander. Firebreak work is only carried out when directed by and coordinated with professional firefighters. This is a support and coordination programme - not independent action.
If you have tractors, ploughs, cultivators or other equipment that could assist with firebreak creation, we'd love to hear from you. Register your interest using the link below - the NFU will be in touch to discuss the programme in more detail.
